Hard News Story

On Friday, March 22, 2013 a large boulder was dumped into a private lot between Dixie Palm Hotel and Best Western Coral Hills. A man left the boulder in the lot, with no permission from hotel employees, instead of dumping it in the proper location. This boulder is a symbol of the lack of knowledge of where to dispose of certain items, such as the giant boulder. It could also symbolize a lack of care in St. George for keeping our city clean and areas undisturbed. The hotels have no knowledge of the man who did this, and have yet to remove the boulder from its current location.

The boulder resides in between the two hotels and is around 4 feet in length or larger.

Feature News Story

The Virtu Movement is a company started by two Dixie State University students, Mike Sheffield and Wes Bledsoe. This is a company giving young entrepreneurs a place to learn tools and tips from professional marketers and entrepreneurs in the business. The two students will be creating a website that features videos they make of them discussing different things to work on as well as interviews with these professionals. They will also be holding different conferences with certain professionals that young entrepreneurs can attend to learn some new ideas and helpful tips.

Out of Class Portraits

This is a glamor portrait. I shot this at an f-stop of 4.5 at 1/125. The iso is 100.

This was a rembrandt portrait. I am not sure if this is exactly right, but I think it is close to one. This was shot at an f-stop of 5 at 1/125. The iso is 100.

In-Class Portraits

I believe this may be close to a Rembrandt. The small triangle under her eye on the left side of her face may be close to one. For this picture I shot at a 100 iso. 1/200 with an f-stop of 7.1. I got some cool shadows on this photo, but I think I just got lucky with this shot.

Not sure if this is a split shot or a glamor. I like how the light highlights Katie's face though. It is very flattering. I used a 100 iso at 1/200 with an f-stop at 5.6.

This may be a Rembrandt as well. It is very slight, but I think it is there. I used a 100 iso, 1/200 with an f-stop of 10. 

Besides for the shadow from her bangs, I think this portrait is a split shot. If her face was turned a little more toward the camera, then it may have been shown a little better. For this shot I used a 100 iso, at 1/200 with an f-stop of 6.3.

It was interesting to take these photos. I am used to being on camera for broadcasting, but having like 4 or 5 people in my face with a camera is a bit nerve racking. I wasn't sure where to look, what face to make or what they were trying to get picture wise. Taking the photos was difficult as well, trying to get the light to hit the face exactly right and keep it there long enough to snap the photo was not easy. I liked how the light could emphasize so much on the face, and the shadow could help features develop. It was fun to experiment though and also to experience being the person being shot.

My Valentines

This is Miranda Jones and Mike Sheffield. They are my Valentines, because I am single and not so ready to mingle. I love these two with all my heart and they are my best friends. I feel a Valentine can be anyone who you love and loves you back just as much, so they are the lucky two! I had a fabulous Valentines day with Miranda surprising her with gifts from Mike which is the best thing I could think to do on this day.. bringing someone joy, happiness and love.

Tight Shot

This is my photo essay of tight shots. For this assignment I worked with a 80mm lens. The tight lens was fun to work with. I could capture so much detail in one shot. I loved working with the trees, because it was cool to see how defined each separate chunk of branch stood out. There is just such clear detail throughout each shot, and it makes me feel like the things are really right there in front of me. The tight shot also helped me to work with spacing things in my frame. I had to make sure I could fit what I wanted to capture with the amount of space I had available. Overall this was a challenging assignment, but it was fun to see my work come out.

Wide Shot

I have a few more pictures than asked for, because I had trouble deciding which ones I liked best. This is a road trip I just took yesterday and got back from today. I went up to north Utah with some friends. I felt this would be the perfect context to take some pictures in. I used an 18mm lens for all of these shots. The wide lens gave me a lot more space to work with. I could capture a lot more of the surroundings going on while still getting good detail in each photo. Landscape is fun to shoot, because I have a lot of options. I think the side lens helped to capture more of the road and give people the sense of actually being in the car and driving with us. I hope that is what it did for you!
